On July 13 – 14, 2016 a seminar "Pearls of Yiddish Culture" for 20 Israeli guests (educators as well as ordinary public) took place in Vilnius.
The event was organized in cooperation with Shai Bar-Ilan travel agency, with which we are working together for the 2nd year already. This company held a tour around Jewish objects in Baltic countries, and our seminar was included in their program.
The seminar took in WJC Yiddish center's premises at the Vilnius Jewish public library, which has become our usual place for holding seminars and attracting people. The program lasted 2 days.
The academical director of the Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordehay Yushkovsky delivered 4 lectures. He spoke about Yiddish as a main language of Eastern European Jewish civilization,
about Jewish Vilna in the mirror of Yiddish culture, about three classics of Yiddish literature featuring similarities and differences in their works, about creation in Yiddish during the Holocaust, and about pecularities of Jewish humour.
One of the participants - a teacher Moshe Levi from Jerusalem - wrote the following feedback:
"Amazing program and wonderful lectures. i started wishing to read stories of Mendele, Sholem-Aleichem and Peretz. I am young and Sefardi, so I don't speak Yiddish. I am sure that there is no way to pass Jewish identity and culture to young Israelis and history of European Jewry without knowledge of the Yiddish culture."
