One of the main objectives of the workshop was improving the system of teaching Yiddish language and culture, mainly in the peripheral areas of Argentina.
Over a hundred participants from Buenos Aires, La Plata, San Juan, Chaco, Rosario, Moisesville, Cordoba and even from Montevideo, Uruguay, Uruguay attended lectures and presentations by Yiddish scholars, teachers and students of the younger generation.
Director of the local YIVO branch, Oscar Yechezkiel Hansman, chaired the event. In his welcome speech, illustrated by documentaries, he covered the history of that academic institution and of the Argentine Jewish community.
Roberto Broztovski welcomed the participants on behalf of the World Jewish Congress. He underlined the support of the Yiddish center in Vilnius and the activities that the center has carried out during the last two years.
On behalf of the WJC Yiddish Center, professor Avrom Lichtenbaum delivered a lecture "Rediscovering Sholem Aleichem." Lichtenbaum presented unknown aspects of the writer's life, ideology, journalistic texts and projects that the author left unfinished at his death in 1916.
Silvia Hansman, YIVO director of Collections, coordinated a round table that brought together innovative research work in the field of Yiddish studies mainly produced in Argentina. She offered an overview of the present and future of Yiddish in academia and society.
Lucas Fiszman, a specialist in language in contact with Buenos Aires University, presented an overview of linguistic historiography "Current research in the diachronic research of Yiddish".
A concert "Three Divas" crowned the seminar. Miriam Nova performed a selection of popular Yiddish songs in vibrant and lively style. Ruth Goldfarb sang popular Yiddish theater songs. Zulema Benveniste, a singer and composer who tours the country playing old songs in Yiddish and Ladino, presented an original Yiddish repertoire infused by poetry and tango music.
